Gymophobics
A lovely surprise...
Tracey visited Gymophobics in Newcastle Under Lyme for one of our bone density testing days on June 11th 2009. Towards the end of the shift, just after she had finished packing up, one of the members came up to her with two brightly coloured fuchsia plants. It transpired that Tracey had tested her bone density on a previous visit (we usually visit places once a year, or once every six months or so). Along with the plants (which were beautiful!) the lady gave us two cards, one to each of us - here is what it said in one of the cards:
"Please accept this "bright fuchsia" as a symbol of the "brighter future" I can expect as a result of taking the opportunity to have my bone density checked last year!
"Thanks to your work and your visit, my problem was discovered and is now being treated. With more thanks thank I can express."
We have put our fuchsia plants on the kitchen windowsill! Much as we hope that our tests encourage individuals to look after their bones, we are sure that looking at these flowers will encourage us to work hard at what we do!!
Ladies Workout Express
Letter received February 2009:
"I had a bone density scan [with Tracey from bonematters] in October 2007 at Ladies Workout Express in Morley, West Yorkshire and as a result, (incidentally, my GP was very impressed) I was sent for a further scan at Leeds General Infirmary. As mine is an almost "borderline job" my GP advised treatment for osteoporosis, which I have now been on for just over a year.
"I cannot thank you enough for revealing something I was not aware of, and trust the treatment will be most beneficial for my future life."

Bank of America
To whom it may concern
Between 23rd and 25th February 2006, Tracey Hunt and Isobel Pugh conducted bone density testing days at the ‘life’ centre, MBNA Europe Bank, Chester. Over the three days, they tested 71 individuals.
In addition to the bone density scans, Isobel and Tracey provided each subject with an osteoporosis awareness pack, to which the individual could add the pieces of information that suited them. The information provided in the awareness pack was well above the standard necessary for such an event.
The feedback that we received from these testing days was excellent. Many people commented upon Isobel and Tracey’s friendly manner, high level of knowledge, and ability to explain complicated matters in a way that was easy to understand. Tracey and Isobel gave their telephone numbers to all subjects, in case they had further questions later on. In addition, they donated 10% of the proceeds to the National Osteoporosis Society.
As a result of the superior level of service that they provided, I have recommended to [the] Head of Facility management at Bank of America, that we take advantage of their services every six months.
I would not hesitate to recommend Tracey and Isobel’s bone density scanning days to any venue, fitness centre or employer wishing to educate their staff on the effects of osteoporosis, and how best to prevent or manage it.
Yours Faithfully

"Just to let you know that I can thoroughly recommend having the bone density heel test. It was quick, informative and value for money. Following my borderline result I mentioned it to the doctor the next time I was at the surgery and they scanned the results graph and accompanying letter onto my notes. I was then referred for a non urgent DXA test to use as a base-line for the future, although by then I had also then discovered that there is osteoporosis in the family. (Had I not had the heel test I wouldn't have mentioned it to my mother, who then remembered her cousins took tablets for osteoporosis.) The following scan showed that I was osteopenic with the lower spine and the hip joint being weaker that would be expected for someone of my age, although not needing treatment at this stage. The doctor will now be keeping an eye on the situation with another scan after a few years and I have decided to take combined calcium and vitamin D tablets as a further precaution. I already do a lot of weight bearing exercise and eat healthily, but particularly liked a couple of the recipes in the hand out!" - Heather
"My bone density appointment... was very quick, painless and the information given was helpful. The booklet I was given was also informative. I was found to be just below average and so took the letter and graph I was given to my GP. I was prescribed a month's supply of Alendronic Acid tablets (one a week) which I have just completed." - IW
"The information was very helpful and I am still digesting it. It was very good to have the chance for a longer chat and advice and your information helped me understand better the result of a previous test I had had through the NHS. I have tried to look into what I can do to increase my calcium intake and I have been inspired to try to be more regular about exercising." - Anon
"I think that in these modern times more people are becoming aware that certain problems can be diagnosed earlier just for making time to attend these scans. The appointment was informative and carried out in a professional manner” - SAS

"I found the bone density appointment last week very informative and very helpful. Staff were friendly, made you feel very welcome and the handouts were very interesting. The interpretation of the test and the discussion with staff gave me very constructive feedback. I can now take action, do the necessary exercises that I was not doing, have an appropriate diet that will help me keep healthy bones or even make my bones stronger. The most encouraging thing is that there is actually a lot you can do to maintain or even improve the health of your bones. Many thanks for your help!" - M.W.
I found the whole experience very informative, quick, pain free, pleasant and friendly. I came away with a lot of useful information as well as a copy of my scan results. On the whole it was well worth the half hour of my time and money going and would recommend the scan to anyone as it was so speedy and it has put my mind at ease. Thanks again for your time!" - Dyan Pearson
