Risk factors for osteoporosis include:
History of fragility fracture in first-degree relative – particularly hip fracture
Personal history of fracture as an adult
Sedentary individuals; individuals that do not participate in weight-bearing activity regularly
Aged 65 or older
Low body weight or thin body stature
Onset of menopause aged 45 or younger
Current cigarette smoking
Use of corticosteroid therapy for more than three months
Impaired vision
Oestrogen deficiency at early age
Poor health/frailty
Recent falls – problems with balance and/or co-ordination
Parathyroid disease or Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
Alcohol intake of more than two drinks/day
Diseases of malabsorption: Crohn’s disease; Coeliac (or Celiac) disease; Ulcerative Colitis
Cushing's Syndrome (or Cushing's disease)
Excessive caffeine consumption (more than 4-5 cups of coffee a day)
Extended use of contraceptive injection (Depo Provera) check with your GP
