Cochrane Collaboration: stance on physical activity and osteoporosis:
http://www.cochrane.org/reviews/en/ab000333.html
Admittedly, 2002 isn't exactly 'latest news' ! But as far as scientific evidence goes, you don't get much more heavyweight than the Cochrane Collaboration: their reviews are painstakingly detailed, and they will find nearly, if not all all of the flaws in any given study!
Some types of physical activity - even amongst different types of weightbearing activity - are far more effective than others for maintaining or improving bone density. Miriam Nelson's book, "Strong Women, Strong Bones" goes in to some depth about the benefits of strength training (Any of the main online or high street retailers should have a copy!). We also help people to decide the best types of activity for them to help them maintain their bone density, during their appointment.
